Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike, Phil Knight -- A short Review

'Shoe Dog' captured along with Nike shoes displaying the famous 'Swoosh' logo.

Nike -- a brand that has became a phenomenon not too long ago and has remained that way ever since then. The famous Nike 'Swoosh' that you see in the aforementioned logo or the generation-defining 'Just Do It' slogan -- they became a worldwide craze. A lot of know about these shoes and the company that makes them, right? But how many of us know about the person who created this company and the story behind it? Not too many, I'm sure. Phil Knight, the creator of Nike, is not a very social person and hadn't really ever much interested in talking about his story... until he decided to write this book.

The book came out a few years ago but I only had the chance to read it this year. In short, it is brilliant. Not something that you'd expect from a multi-billionaire mogul, surprisingly. The book is so rooted and grounded that I sometimes questioned why he never really talked much in detail about the break-through, pop culture defining shoes that they made -- Air Jordans, Cortez, Waffle, Air Max, etc. Don't get me wrong, he does talk a little about some of them but even then, he mentions about them as a process that lead to something bigger and better when it came to the company and the people in it.

Halfway through the book, I realized that this isn't a book about Phil Knight going into the details about the shoes themselves but the people behind those shoes, the vision; struggle; passion behind them. This is a book that showcases, so beautifully, the power of teamwork, staying true to the core values and mission of the company but above all -- persistence.

I would highly recommend this book.

Game of Thrones and Starbucks -- Great marketing?

Game of Thrones is arguably the biggest and most successful TV show in today's time. It's a global force and it has been for quite a few years now. Its characters are very well known and extremely popular. That popularity isn't strictly restricted to just the characters themselves, though. The actors that portray those main characters are equally popular -- Emilia Clarke(Daenerys Targaryen), Kit Harrington(Jon Snow), Peter Dinklage(Tyrion Lannister), Maisie Williams(Arya Stark), Sophie Turner(Sansa Stark), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau(Jaimie Lannister), Lena Headey(Cercei Lannister), among many others. They've all enjoyed immense fame over the past few years and amassed a fortune of money and fans, among the various other great tv/movie gigs that they've booked. As all Game of Thrones fans(and non-fans) are aware, we're on the last season of the show. The final season(8th) is already underway. We're four episodes down and there are just two more left. As you ca

Great Podcasts for budding Entrepreneurs

I started listening to podcasts a lot last year. I hadn't listened to any prior to that. I would occasionally turn up the radio in my car, though. But then again, that was only when I couldn't play my own playlists for some reason. Then one fine day, thanks to Spotify, I discovered podcasts and I've never looked back since. They're extremely informative, useful, entertaining, and convenient. I have a long commute to and from home to university, which is when I use the help of some of my favourite podcasts to help pass my time while learning something new. I always feel like I could use the 45-60 min drive(each way) doing a lot more productive things than driving; reading a book, an interesting article, watching a show, anything really. Thanks to some of these great podcasts down below, I've been able to gain the benefits of all the aforementioned things -- in an audio version obviously, but great, nonetheless: The Tim Ferris Show Tim Ferris is an

Elon Musk - Quotes

Elon Musk is one of most recognized names of today when it comes to technology. He is probably one of the very few people today who could potentially reach the level of superstardom that Steve Jobs enjoyed. Sure, there are many great CEOs and many more brilliant people with fantastic ideas but what sets Elon Musk is the same that set Steve Jobs apart from the others -- sheer animal ambition. Elon Musk has seen it and done it all -- from founding a tech start-up during the dot com boom, Zip2, to working on X.com, which later turned into PayPal. He then went on ahead into the uncharted territories of Space and Electric vehicles -- SpaceX and Tesla. With his sheer resilience, grit and ambition, he transformed the the private space and electric vehicles industry. He made Space sexy again. He revolutionized the way we look at and perceive electronic vehicles. Here are a few great quotes by him that should fuel your hustle in times of need:
